Mama's Sugar Cookie Recipe

Mama's Sugar Cookie Recipe

My mom made the BEST sugar cookies for all of our class parties when we were growing up. I specifically and vividly remember the ones she did at Valentines (they were heart shaped with pink icing and she added RED HOT candies to them, too) and at Halloween (they were pumpkin shaped and had orange and green icing). All my classmates loved them.

So I carried on that tradition and made these cookies for our girls' class parties and their birthday parties. One year, we even had a cookie decorating party where I baked up shapes and the kids got to ice, decorate and take home what they made.

Tons of great memories surrounding Mama's Sugar Cookie Recipe and now I'm making memories with my great nephews. They were here on New Years Day and we cut out shapes, baked and decorated cookies.

This is the type recipe that deserves to be handed down over the years and a great way to do that is with my custom recipe tea towels.
They are among the favorite things I get to do for my customers. Something about having that beloved recipe written in that loved one's handwriting on a tangible, useable item is so meaningful.

The process of creating the recipe tea towels can be tedious because A LOT of beloved recipe cards are in rough shape. They've been used for years, passed down, splattered on, etc. so I have to do a good bit of clean up. But, the results are AMAZING! I hear such great things from customers who have ordered them to give as gifts.

Since I spend time cleaning up the recipe for printing, I include a hard copy recipe card with each tea towel ordered. They make the BEST gift for just about anyone - especially someone who is sentimental. They'll love the nostalgia that comes along with having a handwritten recipe on a towel that can actually be put to use. I think my Mimi would love that I use a towel in my kitchen that bears her pretty cursive writing :)

Here's the recipe!

Mama Carole's Sugar Cookies
2/3 cup shortening
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla
1 egg
4 tsp milk
2 cup flour
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt

Cream shortening, sugar and vanilla. Add egg, mix. Then add milk, mix. Blend in dry ingredients. Chill dough for at least an hour.

On floured surface, roll to 1/8". Cut in to desired shapes. Bake on cookie sheet in 375° oven for 6-8 minutes or until edges start to turn a light golden color.

Mama Carole's Sugar Cookie Icing
1/4 cup shortening
4-5 cups powdered sugar
tiny bit of milk (add more as needed to reach desired consistency)
tiny bit of vanilla
food coloring color of choice

Mix all ingredients until a consistency that will spread well without being too runny. Spread (or pipe) onto cooled sugar cookies and add any desired embellishments before the icing dries.

Leslie's Lazy Icing
Mix powdered sugar and a tiny bit of milk to a thick consistency - not too runny. Add any food coloring desired but not necessary. The white icing does great for quick and fun decorating with kids - and still tastes great!).
